Olafur Eliasson's Notion motion returns with great reception to Rotterdam at a time that the city rejects another one of his works, The Kissing Earth. The reception for these two works can be seen as opposite, but they seem to have a lot in common.
The aesthetics in both pieces come with an air of untouchable Utopia. Utopian thinking makes us disregard the imperfect nature of our humanity by focusing on all things perfect. By making the public the center of the work a contrast appears. People cannot be controlled, predicted, and do not always behave.
'To Come Between' is an performative intervention created by artists Connor Schumacher and Luis Rios-Zertuche, dramaturge Maaike Schuurmans, and performer Majon van der Schot. The performance is developed within the monumental installation Notion Motion in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Starting point of the intervention is an artistic research about the ideas of authorship, appropriation, and the “self” in contemporary art.
